Annemieke Farmilo

Annemieke Farmilo

Annemieke Farmilo was born in Holland in 1949 and came to live in New Zealand with her family when she was seven years old. Her whole life has been a creative journey and her artistic endeavours have included pottery, oil and watercolour painting, photography and even shoemaking.

Annemieke’s recent artworks utilise pounamu and glass; materials that come from the powerful forces of nature. The carefully considered positioning of various raw forms creates both a harmonising collection of colour and pattern, as well as subtly referencing landscape forms. As well as the pounamu and glass, she also uses other natural materials such as horse tail hair, turkey feathers various rocks, shells and pebbles sourced from all around New Zealand. The details in the stones and materials can be interpreted as cliffs, valleys, waterfalls, streams and bush clad hills.

Annemieke’s first collection of works, Nature Series, focused on singling out simple objects from nature, creating an appreciation for natural items often disregarded. Removed from their natural context the delicate objects are read poetically and can be appreciated for their beautiful formal qualities.

Annemieke works from her home-based studio at farmside in Otorohonga creating artwork that reflects the world around her. She has exhibited throughout New Zealand and was included in an exhibition in Dubai in 2006. In 2008 Annemieke was the guest artist at the Riversdale Art Show in Southland.
