Nigel Wilson

Nigel Wilson

Nigels work captures the raw, natural beauty and distinct character of New Zealands Central Otago landscapes through expressive, impassioned brushwork and vibrant, descriptive colour. From a distance Wilson's works provide an imposing scene, but up close, they are even more arresting. Oil paint has been applied with variety, energy and certainty, with each stroke having a compelling autonomy. More recently Nigel has developed a series of works, different in character, even some mounted gouaches behind framed glass.

Nigel was born in 1957 and grew up in Wellington, New Zealand. In 1982 he completed a fine arts degree from Ilam, University of Canterbury, where he was tutored by Don Peebles. He then taught art professionally for 7 years in Southland.

As an independent artist he has won a number of painting awards, is well represented in public and private collections throughout New Zealand and has accepted more than 30 solo exhibitions.

In the year 2000 Nigel moved to Alexandra, where he continues to boldly paint the Otago landscape. More recent involvement with the Central Otago Art Society saw his appointment as President in 2008 through to 2012.

Nigel Wilson - The winner of the ChCh Art Show Award.
"Nigel's work 'Orchard Series' captures the natural beauty and distinct character character of Central Otago landscapes through vibrant descriptive colour and emotionally charged brushstrokes. An imposing and resonating colour field tondo results in an almost ethereal light to play on the otherwise hard autumn shapes."  David Woodings
